Flickerfest 2010 has drawn a record 1500 entries for the program in its 19th year as Australia’s only Academy® Award accredited Short Film festival. The program covers three competitive categories, International, Australian and Documentary.
Acknowledged by industry heavy-weights and the public at large, Flickerfest has become a must-do event in the Sydney summer season as it screens the most creative and inspirational shorts films from across the globe, many as Australian and world premieres.
The original Bondi short film festival, Flickerfest will begin its showcase on 8th January 2010 and over ten days its’ home at the Bondi Pavilion Bondi Beach will be a buzz of film fans and industry practitioners, before it heads off on an extensive nation-wide tour.
This year Flickerfest has again received a significant number of entries from Australia and beyond, far exceeding entries from the 2009 Festival.
“With a record of over 1500 entries received from around the globe this year, Flickerfest continues to attract the latest in cutting edge and award-winning shorts from the world’s most exciting new filmmakers”, said Festival Director, Bronwyn Kidd. “This guarantees that the festival presents our Australian audiences with a short film competition amongst the best in the world.”
The competitive programs will be joined by a number of special programs and forums, including the Australian premiere of Stories On Human Rights. A moving and thought provoking series of 22 short films that will take you on a global journey with award-winning filmmakers from across the world who interpret the complex and timeless significance of Human Rights and their underlying values, produced to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). In 2010 Flickerfest will also celebrate its Oscar® Accredited status with a program celebrating the Best-of-Oscar nominated shorts from the past few years.
The 10-day short film exhibition kicks off on Friday 8th January at Bondi Beach and closes on Sunday 17th of January. After concluding the festival hits the road for a 23-venue national tour across the continent from January to March 2010. The tour encompasses capital centres and key regional areas in NSW, VIC, ACT, SA, QLD, NT and TAS, welcoming Albany in WA, Nambour in QLD and Canowindra and Dungog in NSW for the first time.
Flickerfest is supported by key industry leaders including festival patrons Baz Luhrmann, Gillian Armstrong, Claudia Karvan, Deborra-lee Furness, Hugh Jackman and John Palermo from the leading production company Seed Productions.
